A SPECIAL MOVIE NIGHT DEDICATED TO THE WORLD AIDS DAY

On December 3, 2009 the Alumni Resource Center (ARC) administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS held a special movie night dedicated to the World AIDS Day observed annually on December 1st.

To raise awareness that HIV positive people face,  alumni watched Philadelphia – one of the first mainstream Hollywood films released in 1993 to acknowledge HIV/AIDS, homosexuality and homophobia. It was written by Ron Nyswaner and directed by Jonathan Demme. The film stars tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Joanne Woodward, Jason Robars, Antonio Banderas, Mary Steenburgen, Anna Deavere Smith, Lisa Summerour, Chandra Wilson and Ron Vawter. It was inspired by the story of Geoffrey Bowers, an attorney who in 1987 sued the law firm Baker & McKenzie for unfair dismissal in one of the first AIDS discrimination cases.

The movie was followed by pizza party, where alumni discussed the film as well as HIV/AIDS issues in Ukraine and worldwide.
